HYSTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Austin-Healey 3000 is a sports car produced by the British manufacturer between 1959 and 1967, in collaboration with Healey, which was responsible for building the car bodies.

It was conceived as an evolution of the earlier Austin-Healey 100/6, retaining the same six-cylinder engine, now enlarged to 3,000 cc (hence the name), and delivering a very respectable output of 124 hp. These figures quickly made the model popular in motorsport, where it was widely used in races and competitions of the time, both on track and in rallying, achieving numerous successes up until the mid-1960s.

Although relatively simple in concept, the car was assembled with artisanal care and finished to a high standard. From the very first Mk I version it enjoyed excellent public acclaim, leading to worldwide distribution with over 40,000 units sold. A remarkable result for a “Sunday drive” car, certainly not intended for everyday use; in fact, it was not a true four-seater but a 2+2, with the rear space better suited for two children or additional luggage.

Over the three versions produced during its eight-year production run, the model was offered both as a strict two-seater (always in roadster form) and in the more popular 2+2 configuration.

Initially, as was common on many British cars of the era, both the side windows and the fabric soft top had to be fitted manually with the car stationary, by installing the lightweight supporting frame and then adding the canvas covering.

From the Mk II onwards, roll-up windows integrated into the doors were introduced, along with a folding soft top featuring a built-in linkage, permanently mounted to the bodywork.

The Austin-Healey brand ceased car production in 1972, having already been absorbed through a corporate merger with other manufacturers that eventually became part of the MG-Rover Group.
